I was looking at Tokina lenses today because a friend of mine said they own one and love it. You can really find some deals when it comes to Tokina and Tamron or Sigma lenses compared to a Nikon and Canon. Sometimes our checkbook just can’t take on the price of a Canon or Nikon, luckily there are options out there to choose from!
Official Product Description:
The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X116 Pro DX II Digital Zoom Lens is an ultra-wide angle lens designed for Canon EOS cameras with a fast f/2.8 aperture for better photography in low-light situations. This lens has a slightly shorter zoom range to maintain optical quality at wide apertures. Tokina’s exclusive One-touch Focus Clutch Mechanism allows the photographer to switch between AF and MF simply by snapping the focus ring. Water Repellent Optical Coating to protect the lens during inclement weather.
Great tutorial on the Tokina 11-16mm on DigitalRev TV. He wasn’t impressed with the body , but he liked the optics which is what counts! Watch the video until the end because he really doesn’t get on to explaining the optics until the end of the video!
Oh gosh I am looking at the Wide Angle again…. I always seem to end up back at the Wide Angle, but the Canon EF-S 10-22mm would be totally fun to own, right!

Official Product Description:
10-22mm wide-angle zoom lens with f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture for EOS digital SLR cameras
Superior AF performance and speed, with full-time manual focus with the turn of a ring
Close focusing to 9.5 inches; fills the frame with subjects as small as 3.6 x 5.4 inches
Circular aperture design produces natural highlights
With its effective focal length range of approximately 16-35mm in 35mm format, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM is a remarkable lens with outstanding image quality that will take your photography into new dimensions and areas of dramatic expression. The super-wide zoom not only gives you the freedom to get exactly what you want in the shot, it dramatically alters perspective to allow for dynamic expression. The lens allows you to get extremely close to subjects, exaggerating the difference in size between a near object and its background. Creative photographers can use this phenomenon to create excellent separation between subject and background for a strong sense of presence, or for a pan-focus effect with everything from foreground to background sharply in focus. Exceptionally light and compact for its focal length range, the EF-S 10-22mm f/3. 5-4. 5 USM also has an incredibly close minimum focusing distance of just 24cm. A ring-type USM works in concert with the camera to provide super-fast, precision auto focusing and predictive tracking – with full manual override available at any time. Designed specifically for digital photography, the lens has specially shaped lens elements and Super Spectra coatings to suppress ghosting and flare, which can be caused by reflections off digital camera sensors. An exclusive optional lens hood can further reduce the incidence of flare. A circular aperture provides a pleasing background blur when shooting with a wide aperture; ideal for creating a sense of depth and getting your subject or model to stand out from the background.
As always a great review from CameraLabs:
The Tokina 10-17mm canon mount lens gives you the wide angle you need. I think these wide angles are so creative, love them! The widest mine lens goes is 17mm with a crop sensor camera I always want just a little bit more in the shot. This would do it, and the reviews are good!

The new Tokina AT-X 107 DX is a full-frame fish-eye lens that gives the photographer a 180&Mac176; field of view with dramatic curvature of field or “fish-eye” effect. With this lens an entire view or vista can be captured, wider than the human eye can see. The AT-X 107 opens an entirely new dimension of photography.
The front element of the AT-X 107 DX has a newly formulated WP or “Water Proof” optical coating on the glass. This new coating makes marks such as spots left by water or finger-prints much easier to clean than standard multi-coating.**
The rear optical group of the lens contains 1 SD (Super-Low Dispersion) glass element to reduce the number of elements (pieces of glass) in the optical design in order to make the lens more compact, light-weight and faster focusing.
I am in search of a wide angle lens right now. I love the pictures taken using the 18mm with my subject pretty close. I love how it distorts not only them but the distance behind them as well. I don’t want a full on fish eye, but something in between. I also would enjoy it when taking pictures of larger groups like the school band. When I want to get the entire gym in my picture without sitting in the top row. Today I was looking like I always do. I guess I am a bit of a window shopper I like to browse. I have been looking for a few months now.
These are my top picks right now
Priced at $479.99 with great reviews. I wish it was a bit lower on the f stop, but it goes all the way to 10mm which I think is pretty awesome!
I have never bought from Sigma before, but would be willing to break free of my Canon purchases and give it a try. I hear only good things about them!
Canon does have one that is comparable the Canon EF-@ 10-22mm but this one is priced at $859.00 a little bit more, but you do get a little bit more. The f stop starts at f/3.5-4.5 which is nice, the smaller the aperture the better in my book!
Jury is still out on this one…. I have to do some more research on crop factor as well. Since I have the Canon 60D.
