Tips on using Color in your Photography

Understanding Colors in Photography

This is a pretty great tutorial on using color in your photography by DigitalCameraWorld, but it goes the distance and also talks about 1)Using opposite colors on the color wheel 2)Allow for a dominant color and 3)Composing photos boldly

DigitalCameraWorld

How to Get great colors has some amazing tips… This quote got me, tells me that as a photographer needs to be patient. When looking for color Ken Rockwell says “The peak color, which are the shots I show, only exists for 60 seconds at most, if it happens at all, any given day.”

This site always has good tips, and great articles that are full of great photography tips!

There is a great set of pictures on this next article by Shutter Mike,  talks about color vs. light. He took a picture of lemons on a yellow plate under Tungsten light and one in mid-afternoon light, what a difference. So it doesn’t just matter what color you see it’s also what the camera can see.

Learn by Doing Photography #30 – Complementary Colors

I was looking for complementary colors this week, walked around town and for some reason couldn’t find anything that was striking to photograph. Well I take that back there was plenty to photography, but I was really looking for orange and blue and didn’t find it. So tonight when we were at home we set up one of our puzzles that has some great vibrant colors. I took some sharp pictures, but accidentally hit the shutter before I was focused on this one. Turns out it was my favorite of the bunch. Something a little different then I was going for, but I liked the colors is showed.

It’s strange how you can like a picture one minute and then when you come back to it the next time you’re not really feeling it. That is how I feel about this photo below. At first I liked the blurry out of focus, thought it showed the rainbow colors in a different way, but today when I look at it it’s making my eyes go all crazy.

Made me think of an interesting thing I learned in class one day long ago that I forgot about. The teacher said “always edit and walk away for a least 15 minutes” when you come back you will know which one you like and don’t like. Especially if you were having trouble deciding between two images.
