Learn by Doing Photography #42 – Finding form in photography

Still life can be so much fun to photograph… I think you can learn so much from just using a single light source and what you have in your house. Learning about light and how to create form starts by just picking up your camera and playing with the light. This week I took a few pictures of different things in the kitchen but the traditional green apple is what I decided on. Try Marks technique below with the side light, but then move it around and see how the form changes. Is it still round or does it look flat as you move the light around!

For this picture I just used a black piece of construction paper and a light source to the left that was slightly in front of the apple. Camera was on a tripod as I did the shot. I underexposed by -1 to help darken the background and used the black slider in lightroom to make sure it was a solid black.

Mark Wallace with AdoramaTV always has a great tutorial on finding form in your photography. Watch this video and then head to your kitchen to see what you can photograph!

Plus there are a few tips he uses in Lightroom that would apply to any photograph.
