Learn by Doing Photography #40 – Back to Basics, rules of Thirds
Our morning walks to school have felt more like winter than fall walks. The wind just nips at your checks as we walk to school. Yet my daughter Kat who is only in 2nd grade won’t wear last years winter coat because it’s pink. Pink is out blue is in or really any other color except for pink jackets. She has style and she knows what she wants to wear and I love that. I can’t remember the last time I picked anything for her to wear. I do miss the days of miss matched clothes and at least 20 berets in her hair. She has always come out of her room with the best outfits. Sometimes it was flowered pants, a skirt and a stripped shirt with so so many berets in her hair. Or a princess dress from Halloween and she was ready to go grocery shopping. Ah sweet girl is growing up.
When we bought a new coat today I had my camera and took a picture. It go me thinking about the rules of thirds. I actually still remember the first time the I heard about the rule of thirds. It was one of those Aha moments. The one on the left follows the rule of thirds while the one on the right centers her face. Which one do you like better?
What is the Rule of Thirds
It’s a guideline that says an image should be divided into nine equal parts by using two equally spaced horizontal and vertical lines. The idea is if you place your subject or points of interest on these intersecting lines you create a balanced look. I found a great tutorial by brightvisionmedia talking about Composition and Rule of Thirds a excellent watch!
