Learn by Doing Photography #22 – Photographing Waterfalls

Spring is in full swing with rain showers, flowers blooming and of course water falls and rivers running at high. So if you find yourself next to a waterfall this week be sure to take advantage of it.

My husband and I took a drive to Portland this week, just the two of us on a road trip! I had an incredible time driving, talking, listening to music. On the way back we stopped along the Columbia River where there were many many waterfalls to take advantage of. Hank was great as we drove asking me which waterfall I wanted to stop and then patiently waiting as I set up to take a picture. Seems like no matter what time of year I drive through Oregon everything is lush and green and so incredible beautiful!

I realized when I got home I wish I had more of the bottom of the waterfall in my photograph. I always have to remind myself to pay attention to the edge of the photograph not just the middle. Someone told me just last week, you as the photographer need to be responsible for every element in your picture from corner to corner. Good advice!

Here is a video by Jeremiah Fisher that has some great tips on freezing the water a waterfall with a high shutter speed as well as slowing down the shutter speed so end up with that soft beautiful water.
